Part-1

Can you think of a world without food? Or music?

Life has thrived and jived to tunes and tastes. Food and music- two of the greatest pleasures known to humanity- have propelled the circle of life. Food and music have evolved with time and time has evolved with food and music.

Diners and cafes employ a multi-sensory device that forms their ambience. It isn’t mere calories on a plate that is served but a rendition of soul curry. The experience of wine and jazz in sync with the sugar rush and a bad day is forgotten in a jiffy!

The divine connections between food and music cannot be understood, cannot be fathomed. We can but appreciate the intangible virtue that elevates the quality of our lives. The philosophy of food and music is in the self-actualization of what constitutes the eternal spirit.

Given the influence that food and music have over life, it is a testament to that universal bounty that wars aren’t fought over it. Rather, food and music know no boundaries. It is a river of peace that flows in the face of strife symbolizing the hope to life.

People like to listen to music, hum and even sing when they cook. Even when they enjoy their meals and refreshments. Musicians too are inspired by food when they are doing their thing!

So, here’s a list of songs that are a sweet tribute to kitchen’s glory. Enjoy!

  • Food, by The Turtles

Lyrics:

Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, spaghetti, rice,
French fried potatoes and gulash. (Ooooh.)
Eggs over easy, asparagus spears,
Hot dogs and baked beans and sauerkraut.
Black-bottomed mushrooms and chicken pot pie,
Pink lemonade on the fourth of July.
[Sounds of firecrackers popping.]
[Pitch pipe sounds a note.]
(But there’s one thing that we’d,)
(Gladly doff our shells for,)
(So we present our recipe,)
(And wish you well, for…)
(…we’ll take,)
Two thirds cups of flour,
A teaspoon full of salt,
A quarter pound of butter,
Add an egg and blend it out.
Two squares of dark chocolate,
Walnuts, pot and sugar,
A teaspoon of bakin’ powder,
Thirty minutes in the heat and it’s over.
Tea biscuits, tomato soup, ham on rye.
Hot apple, pineapple sundae. (Hoooo!)
Honeydew, artichoke, hearts of lettuce,
Buttered bagels and lox, cream cheese, rhubarb.
(Hoooo!)
Peanut butter sandwiches, English muffins.
Kumquats, berries, fish, steak and grapefruit.
grits, parsnips,
marmalade, shishkebab, turtle soup. 5
[Sound of a bottle top being popped and effervescence.]
[Spoken:]
Well, those brownies ought to be just about ready now.
Why don’t we go have one? Hmmmmm? I mean, really…
[More effervescence to fade.]

  • Hot Potatoes, by The Kinks

Lyrics:

My baby woke me up this mornin’
She said get down that labor exchange
And if you don’t come home with a job son
You’ll get no dinner today

You gotta secure me a weekly workin’ wage
You’ll get no more fancy cookin’
You’ll get no more apple pie
You’ll just get those plain hot potatoes
To satisfy your appetite

La, la, la, la, la, la potatoes
Boiled, French fried, any old way that you wanna decide
Hot potatoes
I want your lovin’ every single day

I said I don’t need your fancy cooking
I like the simple things in life
Just give me those plain hot potatoes
And I’ll be well satisfied
They’ll satisfy my appetite

La, la, la, la, la, la potatoes
Boiled, French fried, any old way that you wanna decide
Hot potatoes
I want your lovin’ 60 minutes an hour
I want your lovin’ 24 hours a day
I want your lovin’ 7 days a week
Yeah, yeah, oh yeah

I want your love, I need your love
But all I get is hot potatoes
When I come home late at night
To satisfy my appetite

Don’t give me no more potatoes
Boiled, French fried, any old way that you wanna decide
Hot potatoes
I want your lovin’ every single day
I want your lovin’

La, la, la, la, la, la potatoes
Boiled, French fried, any old way that you wanna decide
Hot potatoes, hot potatoes, yeah

  • Eat It, by “Weird Al” Yankovic

Lyrics:

How come you’re always such a fussy young man
Don’t want no Cap’n Crunch, don’t want no Raisin Bran
Well don’t you know that other kids are starvin’ in Japan
So eat it, just eat it
Don’t want to argue, I don’t want to debate
Don’t want to hear about what kinds of foods you hate
You won’t get no dessert ’till you clean off your plate
So eat it
Don’t you tell me you’re full
Just eat it, eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken
Have some more pie
It doesn’t matter
If it’s boiled or fried
Just eat it, just eat it
Just eat it, just eat it, Woo!
Your table manners are a crying shame
You’re playing with your food, this ain’t some kind of game
Now, if you starve to death
You’ll just have yourself to blame
So eat it. Just eat it.
You better listen, better do as you’re told
You haven’t even touched your tuna casserole
You better chow down, or it’s gonna get cold
So eat it.
I don’t care if you’re full
Just eat it, eat it
Open up your mouth and feed it
Have some more yogurt
Have some more Spam
It doesn’t matter if it’s fresh or canned
Just eat it! Eat it! Eat it! Eat it!
Don’t you make me repeat it!
Have a banana, have a whole bunch
It doesn’t matter what you had for lunch
Just eat it! Eat it!
Eat it! Eat it!
Eat it! Eat it!
If it’s getting cold, reheat it
Have a big dinner.
Have a light snack
If you don’t like it, you can’t send it back
Just eat it! Eat it!
Get yourself an egg and beat it!
Have some more chicken. Have some more pie
It doesn’t matter if it’s boiled or fried
Just eat it! Eat it!
Don’t you make me repeat it!

  • You’re My Meat, by Joe Jackson

 Lyrics:

Outside in and inside out you’re my meat
I, fat and forty but lordy you’re my meat
From your feet to your head you knock me dead, you’re my meat
I got you covered but baby, you’re my meat

In the days of old when knights were bold
They were pious and modest I’m told
Can’t you see that couldn’t be me
I’d have to talk about your yams and your big fat hams

It excites me so because I know you’re my meat
Fat and forty but lordy you’re my meat

In the days of old when knights were bold
There were pious and modest I’m told
Can’t you see that couldn’t be me
I’d have to talk about your yams and your big fat hams

It excites me so because I know you’re my meat
Fat and forty but lordy you’re my meat

Fat and forty but lordy, lordy, you’re my meat
